Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus. Esther 1:9 NKJV
Now look what we have here, a woman, not just any woman, a Queen. In her position of importance/major status she has power, responsibilities and most importantly, INFLUENCE. She can use her power, responsibilities & influence to do good or bad, help others or take from others, motivate other or discourage others etc…
With this power, responsibility & influence she is also prone to either be humble or proud, modest or arrogant. Unfortunately and quite annoyingly, like many women nowadays, she chose the latter.
On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha […] to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him. Esther 1:10-12 NKJV
As a man, I can relate to the King’s anger. A simple request from her husband, asking his wife to make an appearance was ignored – The King was not asking her to come to wash up, clean up, cook for him etc… in fact he wanted to boast about her and show her off, yet the Queen chose to be arrogant & proud towards this request – how embarrassing for the King. If there is one thing you women should know is that the moment you offend a man’s pride, be ready for serious consequences.
When I look at this situation I just laugh because this woman forgot in that split moment the level of influence & authority she had, she forgot that though she was the Queen, she didn’t have the same level of power, importance and authority that the King had.
“What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her by the eunuchs?” And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: “Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. For the queen’s behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come. Esther 1:15-17 NKJV
Mate! She had to pay, she disrespected the King, forget how influential she was & her level of authority. So many female celebrities do this as well, with so many admiring female fans watching & following what they do.
If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. When the king’s decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small.” And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan. Esther 1:19-21 NKJV
A real man won’t tolerate pride, arrogance or disrespect from his wife or girlfriend because he knows his value and authority. He knows that since statistically speaking there are 7 women for every man, he can find respect & humility elsewhere. In the King’s case later, the new Queen Esther.
The lesson is simple ladies: Don’t allow pride or arrogance into your character unless you want to downgrade your value. Besides this example of former Queen Vashti, i’m sure you have seen or heard of many cases like this.
